Of course I am a big advocate for massage when an individual is experiencing headache pain, but what if no one is around (or willing) to help you feel more comfortable? Here are a few of my favorite tricks for easing headache pain:
* Place an ice pack on the forehead or at the base of the neck
and a heating pad under the knees. This technique draws the
blood down from the head, causing some of the pounding
sensation to let up.
*Lie on the floor with two ping pong sized balls under the head,
at the base of the skull, one on each side. This will stretch out
the muscles in the neck. Hold for up to 10 minutes while
breathing deeply. It's surprisingly soothing; I once fell asleep
like this.
*Sit in the bathtub and run the shower so that the spray hits
both the head and back. I find much relief with a massaging
showerhead that includes a turbo jet setting.
*I do use some prescription medication, but when it is not
available or needs a little boost, I take a few Alieve tablets
with a cup of some caffeinated beverage. This works much
better if you do not consume much caffeine normally.
<Please consult your doctor about the medication possibilities
that are right for you.>
*Grab hold of your hair near the roots at the top of your head
with both hands. GENTLY pull while yawning at the same
time. I'm not making this up, honest. Just try it. Something
about Oxygen and stretching that works together...
Hopefully at least a few of these help. Try to schedule a head and neck massage soon. When you are in pain, you tense up more muscles than you realize. If the pain lasts awhile, so will your residual stiffness.
Hope you are smiling again soon!
